About me...

My name is Vincent Chan, and I was born in July 1976 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. I received my degree of Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) in 2000, and since have had the opportunity to travel to many far-away areas of Canada to practice. I am based in Winnipeg, Manitoba and have a full-time position in the University of Manitoba's Centre for Community Oral Health. I also do computer consulting and database programming for the department when I am in Winnipeg, which give me an interesting break from doing dentistry. I love to travel, and have spent my last 3 summers driving across Canada as well as to Mexico.

This was taken during a street fair promoting the Health Action Centre, one of the places I work while in Winnipeg.

I first picked up a digital camera during the fall of 1999. It didn't take long for me to gain an awareness for a passion that had, until that moment, now, been dormant. I have found that having a digital camera allows me to have more freedom to be more creative and to take pictures without being limited by film, developing costs, etc. Many have said that I am a picture fanatic, and it's true.
Listed are the digital cameras that I have owned over the years:
Kodak DC40 - September 1999 to May 2000
Kodak DC215 - May 2000 to Feb 2001
Olympus D490Z - Feb 2001 to October 2003
Olympus C-2100 UZ - March 2001 to October 2003
Canon EOS Digital Rebel - October 2003 to September 2004
Canon EOS 1D Mark II - July 2004 to present
Canon EOS 20D - November 2004 to present

Here's some of my favorite non-northern pictures from my travels:

The Blue Angels aerobatic team performing over Puget Sound in Seattle, WA.
Sunlight shining through a break in the clouds over Mt. Whistler in Jasper, Alberta.
Setting sun behind a fleet of fishing vessels in Heritage Harbour, Vancouver, British Columbia.
Fireworks being launched from a barge in English Bay, Vancouver, BC. during the Celebration of Lights fireworks competition.
Colorful lighting inside the Palais des Congres in Montreal, Quebec.
A beautiful evening scene in Hartland, New Brunswick.
Tranquil morning at the docks in Port-aux-Basques, Newfoundland.

I am also a home theatre afficionado. I had been watching movies on my computer for some time, but was never satisfied with the picture or sound quality. I decided to upgrade to a full-fledged system in the summer of 2000. I have a modest setup in my basement right now which I am slowly but constantly upgrading. I had started off with a pair of Paradigm Titans and a PDR-10 Subwoofer. The system has grown substantially since then. I didn't have a dedicated room in the house to set up a theater so I sectioned off a 10*12' corner of my living room with half-height walls. As the pictures below show, it's not finished yet. I've been working on it during my off periods for over 2 years now. The sound from this setup can shake the walls and foundation of the house, much to the dismay of the neighbors!

This is pic of the front of the theatre. It shows the Toshiba 50" 50A50 RP-TV, Paradigm Reference Active/40's (Mains), Paradigm Reference Studio CC (Center), Paradigm PW-2200 Subwoofer (replaced now with the SVS PC+ 20-39). The movie playing is Dario Argento's 'Phenomena'
This is the rear of my theater. Shown are the Paradigm ADP-70's (Wall-mounted dipole surrounds), Paradigm Titans (Mounted from the ceiling, in series with the ADP-70's), Paradigm CC-170, and of course, the big comfy 1970's chairs.
This is my gear. On the left is the Outlaw Model 950 Preamp/Processor and the Rotel RMB-1075 THX Amplifier. On the right is the Panamax Max1000+ power conditioner, the Toshiba SD-1750 DVD player, the RCA RP8070 5-disc CD changer, and the Kenwood CD-4700M 200-CD changer.
